We buy junk and sell antiques

Recently, CNA interviewed a vintage store owner whose tagline is “We buy junk and sell antique.” My first reaction was to laugh. Upon reflection, I realise there’s much wisdom in it. If you are renovating a new property and your current sofa does not fit the design style. Do you,

  1. upholster the old one;

  2. sell the old one and buy a new one;

  3. sell the old one and buy a second hand one; or

  4. throw out the old one and buy a new one?

I have no data but my sense is 4 is probably the most common behaviour. As the saying goes, “out with the old, in with the new“. It signals a fresh start, a new beginning. But, the old sofa is either incinerated or ends up in a landfill when it still has lifespan. It’s a pity.

I think there are good reasons to pick either 1, 2 or 3 before we reach for 4.

  1. Older items typically contain more details, are likely hand made and require more craftsmanship.

  2. Pre-loved items also contain more character; at some point, the item meant something to its owner, so it contains human meaning i.e. sentimental value.

  3. Pre-loved also feels more exclusive; few will have the same item as you, so it brings unique character to a space.

  4. The world is already overflowing with stuff, so it is in the common good to not add more unless necessary.

  5. There maybe cost savings to the first three options and there is great value to be found in pre-loved items if we know where to look.

  6. Lastly, the treasure hunt can be rather fun and rewarding.

This cost us SGD17 from a carouseller.

Carousell is one popular platform for pre loved items. Next time you pass a flea market, we hope you will pop in for a quick look!
